In the golden age of soda, from the 1830s all the way through the 1920s, dispensaries were fashionable. Thirsty customers got their fixes from gaudy, ominous machines, that were designed to make refreshment a multi-sensory experience. The first person to create a soda fountain was G.D. Dows. He created a crank apparatus to shave ice, cups to measure, syrup spigots, a soda tube, and then covered it all in white marble. The soda arms race was on!
